How to Play Solitaire: Complete Beginner's Guide

Learn Klondike Solitaire step by step

Solitaire (also called Klondike Solitaire) is one of the most popular card games in the world. It's perfect for relaxing and keeping your mind sharp.

Goal of the Game

Move all 52 cards to the four foundation piles in the top right corner. Each foundation pile starts with an Ace and builds up to King, all in the same suit (hearts, diamonds, clubs, or spades).

The Layout

The game starts with 7 columns of cards (called the tableau). The first column has 1 card, the second has 2, and so on up to 7. Only the top card of each column is face-up. The remaining cards form the stock pile in the top left.

Moving Cards

You can move cards between tableau columns by placing them in descending order and alternating colors. For example, a red 7 can go on a black 8. Click a card to select it (it will highlight), then click the destination.

Using the Stock Pile

Click the stock pile to flip over cards to the waste pile. In Turn 1 mode, one card is flipped at a time. In Turn 3 mode, three cards are flipped at once, making the game more challenging.

Winning Tips

Always move Aces to the foundation right away. Try to uncover face-down cards as quickly as possible. In Turn 1 mode, you can plan more carefully since you see each card one at a time.

FAQ

Is every solitaire game winnable?

No — not every deal is solvable. Studies suggest about 80% of Turn 1 deals are theoretically winnable if played perfectly.

What does 'Turn 3' mean?

In Turn 3 mode, you flip three cards from the stock pile at once. This makes the game harder since you can only play the top card of the three.

Can I move multiple cards at once?

Yes! You can move any face-up sequence of alternating colors as a group onto another pile.
