Most casual solitaire players have no idea what a normal win rate looks like. Here is what the math actually says about how often each variant should be won — and what your win rate tells you about your play.
Solitaire variants differ dramatically in how often they're winnable. The gap between games like FreeCell (99.999% theoretical winnability) and Pyramid (around 12%) isn't about difficulty — it's about mathematical structure. Some games have inherent constraints that make most random deals unwinnable no matter how well you play.
Klondike is the most analysed solitaire variant — and the most debated. Computer simulations suggest that 79–82% of Klondike Draw-1 deals are theoretically winnable with perfect play. But human win rates are much lower: 43–47% for Draw-1 and 20–25% for Draw-3. The gap between theoretical winnability and human performance is larger in Klondike than any other major variant.
Microsoft's original 32,000-deal FreeCell set has been completely solved: only 8 deals are impossible. That's a theoretical win rate of 99.975%. For skilled players who understand FreeCell strategy, practical win rates of 85–95% are achievable. FreeCell is the solitaire variant where skill most directly determines outcome.
Spider 1-suit: approximately 99% of deals are winnable; skilled players achieve 92–98% wins. Spider 2-suit: around 50–60% theoretically winnable; skilled players win 35–50%. Spider 4-suit: around 50–55% theoretically winnable; even skilled players win only 35–45%. The dramatic drop in human win rate for 4-suit reflects the exponentially higher complexity.
Pyramid has the lowest win rate of any commonly played solitaire: approximately 12–16% of deals are theoretically winnable. The structure — pairing cards that sum to 13 across a pyramid — creates many deals where critical cards are permanently blocked by others. With optimal play, human win rates hover around 8–12%.
Golf Solitaire win rates depend heavily on the specific rules: whether King-to-Ace wraps, whether multiple stock passes are allowed. Standard Golf has theoretical win rates around 70–75%. TriPeaks is more forgiving: approximately 80–90% of deals are winnable with good play.
Understanding win rates changes how you play. Losing a Pyramid game doesn't mean you played poorly — you probably simply had an unwinnable deal. Losing a FreeCell game, by contrast, almost certainly means a suboptimal decision somewhere. Calibrating your self-assessment to actual win rate data makes solitaire more enjoyable and less frustrating.
