The Hardest Solitaire Deals: Why Some Games Are Almost Unwinnable

By Online Solitaire Free Editorial Team · Editorial Standards

Not every solitaire deal is winnable. Some are mathematically impossible from the start, others are so unforgiving that even perfect play loses. Here is what makes some deals genuinely hard — and how to recognize when a game is unwinnable.

What Makes a Deal Hard?

Not all solitaire deals are equally difficult. The key factors that make a deal challenging: many face-down cards in deep columns, few available moves at the start, critical cards buried under long sequences, and situations where multiple good moves lead to dead ends. Hard deals often look manageable until a critical card is trapped with no way out.

The 5% of Deals That Stumps Everyone

In Klondike Draw-1, research estimates that approximately 5–8% of deals are simply unwinnable regardless of how they're played. The challenge is identifying these early — playing them out to the end wastes time. Learning to recognise unwinnable patterns (buried Aces with no accessible release route, colour dead-locks) is a mark of advanced play.

The Classic Nightmare Layout

The hardest Klondike deals share common features: all four Aces buried below at least 3–4 face-down cards, Kings positioned in columns that prevent creating empty spaces, and suits distributed so that building sequences requires moving large blocks simultaneously. When you see this pattern, switch to Draw-3 rules or accept the loss.

FreeCell's Unsolvable Deals

FreeCell is famous for having only 8 unsolvable deals in the standard 32,000-game Microsoft set (deals #11982, #146692, #186216, #455889, #495505, #512118, #517776, and the rarely discussed #781948). These specific deal numbers are mathematically proven unwinnable. Every other FreeCell deal is solvable with optimal play.

The Daily Challenge Approach

Playing daily challenge solitaire — where everyone attempts the same seeded deal — provides the best context for understanding deal difficulty. Comparing your result to the leaderboard reveals whether a deal is objectively hard (low completion rates across all players) or just hard for you specifically. This feedback loop accelerates skill development significantly.
